Town Meeting: A Juniors Perspective

When I saw the town meeting announcement made by the SCARS service learning group of Sage Hill, I was very excited. The group showed us a video for an event called "Tough Mudder," an intense 12 mile obstacle course to help raise money for our veterans. The race is on March 28. and those who are under 18 at the time are still able to help giving out waters to those participating in the obstacle course. The obstacle course looks very challenging but wildly fun. Apart from watching the video, the group also talked about the importance of veterans in our community and how we should appreciate them. Mr. Anderson's recognition of the veterans in our Sage community helped me connect to the topic even more.
The only bout of disappointment came when I found out that you must be 18 to participate in the actual obstacle course. However, my sadness soon turned to excitement when I heard I could still participate as a volunteer helper.

Wednesday 4/16

Revised Plan for the year of 2015:

Wounded Warrior Service Proposal

1.        Who are the students participating in this project?

Aaron Kim, Gordon Strelow, Logan Cook, and Zach Burns

2.       What is your area of interest, and why?

We are interested in helping our community’s wounded warriors, who have sacrificed so much for our country. They allow us to keep our freedoms and everything this country stands for. For example, we have already completed a fundraiser (car wash) and plan to have many more in the coming year. This money for donations along with our volunteering hours will provide much help for the WWP organization.

3.       Who are the potential partner organizations you may utilize throughout this project?

     Wounded Warrior Project
     (855) 252-4997
Register Online for your event for $10 and they will supply literature on WWP, pens, stickers, etc.
Wounded Warrior Camp Pendleton Volunteer Information
     Yoses.levine@usmc.mil
     (760) 468-9856
     Wounded Warrior Family Readiness
    (760) 725-4111
     SSgt (Staff Sergeant) Abner
    (760) 468-9856

4.       What is the specific community need(s) that will be addressed? Why do they need to be addressed?

We hope to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project in the Orange County area.
We want to provide help for the injured military service members and their families and develop relationships with the veterans. We wish to show as much appreciation as possible for the injured servicemembers and their families. The military service members have sacrificed so much for their country, and we feel that our community should do something to give back. When we contacted the Wounded Warrior Project, they conveyed that they needed more volunteers and funds to build upon their Hope Center. This is where we wish to provide the most support on a monthly basis. In this way, we will be volunteering next year regularly and, with the money from future fundraisers, we hope to help their organization out to purchase future necessary equipment.

5.       What are possible activities/opportunities you may execute within the scope of this project?

We have already reached out the to Wounded Warrior Camp Pendleton Branch. They offered us the opportunity to volunteer at one of their pre-existing programs. If we were to volunteer we would be working at the Hope Center at Camp Pendleton. That’s where all the wounded veterans go to receive physical treatment. Another one of our group objectives is to hold a paintball tournament and raffle to raise money for the Wounded Warriors project. This idea has already been approved by the organization. In our senior year, we hope to host a significant amount of fundraisers throughout the year, as well as organize our big event, the paintball tournament. However, the majority of our time will be dedicated to volunteering at the Camp, as this seems to be our most reasonable option.

6.       What do you hope to have accomplished by March?

We hope to have hosted at least two successful fundraisers for WWP. We also hope to attend multiple WWP programs and volunteer at the Hope Center frequently. Additionally, we hope to successfully host our planned paintball tournament so that the proceeds can aide the Hope center at Camp Pendleton. In terms of next year, we hope to have completed many fundraisers during the year, but our main goal is to gain access into the necessary USO organization and begin our volunteer work at the Hope Center.

7.       How will you plan to achieve your goals? (Be as specific as possible)

     Paintball
We are looking to host a Consolation Bracket Paintball tournament.
Teams will consist of 6 players with a total of 12 teams. The game played will be Elimination (Last Man Standing). Two teams will compete against each other, eliminating players by marking each other with paintballs, until one player remains.
The teams entering the tournament will have to pay an entrance fee to cover the cost of the game play and donations to WWP. Entrance cost will be determined after we receive an email response from Camp Pendleton Paintball Park.
     Raffle
The secondary fundraiser will be hosting a raffle. (Most likely at the paintball tournament)
Raffles tickets will be sold at $5-$10 / per ticket, which will be entered into the raffle for a large prize. Possible items are:
     Xbox One
     PS4
     Camera
The money received from the raffle tickets will cover the cost of supplies (Tickets and Prizes) and the remaining balance will be donated to WWP.
  • Goals for Next Year:
    • Hope Center
      • Through Amy Riviera, we hope to submit applications to the USO and enter their program to allow us to volunteer at Pendleton
